Leave That Thermostat Alone!

Many people may think it’s a money- and energy-saving idea to turn off their air conditioners while they head off for a shift at work; after all, wouldn’t they save money and energy by not running the A/C for nine hours? In theory it may seem like a good idea, but the reality is that actually backfires and often ends up costing people more money, evidenced by their higher-than-average energy bills.

When it’s hot outside and you leave your home for the day, you turn off your air conditioner, and note that the thermostat reads a comfortable 72 degrees. You return at 5:00 in the afternoon to find that your home is at 83 degrees, and feels much too warm, stuffy and humid. You turn your thermostat down to 65 degrees in an attempt to get your home back down to 72 degrees faster. Hours later, you note that the thermostat reads 79 degrees, but your air conditioner hasn’t shut off since you turned it on to run. What is going on?

Here’s the deal: cranking the thermostat to 65 degrees to get your home to 72 degrees faster isn’t going to make a difference; the air is going to remain moving at a set rate of speed. By undercutting the desired temperature, the only thing you’re doing is wasting  energy and money.

There are two problems here: You turning off your AC while you are away for the day, and you turning the thermostat way down in hopes of a quick temperature recovery. If you’re out all day with the air conditioning off, it’s going to take a massive amount of work for your system to be able to bring a stifling hot house down to the temperature you are comfortable with. It’s best to turn your thermostat up a bit, but NOT off while you’re away, and when you return to your home you should gradually lower the thermostat as needed.

The ideal solution is to invest in a programmable thermostat, which can let the house warm a bit during your time away and gradually lower the temperature to the right level before you return. Setting the thermostat up 7-10 degrees while you’re away can not only save you up to 10% on your bills each month but can also allow you to leave that thermostat alone.
