Troubleshooting Your AC? Follow our Checklist

troubleshoot AC problems

For many people a sauna is relaxing. Unless it’s inside their home. Masters Heating & Cooling knows it’s not a pleasant feeling when it’s hot outside and so hot in the house you would swear even the Goldfish and Tetras in the fish tank are sweating. For whatever reason, your air conditioner is not cooling.

The best way to prevent cooling emergencies is regular AC maintenance by Masters, the experts in air conditioning for Decatur, Angola, Fort Wayne, and surrounding areas.

Our technicians are always ready to help you, but before you make that emergency call for AC repair, check out some common reasons why it’s stopped working. Before going through this checklist, you can also check out this video on troubleshooting your air conditioning.

If there’s no air coming out of the vents at all your first stop should be the thermostat:

  • If digital make sure the display is working
  • No display could mean a dead battery
  • Confirm the switch is set to cool (not heat)
  • Make sure the desired temperature is set correctly
  • Generally, the fan switch should be set to auto
  • If you’re unsure about settings read your owner’s manual

The next step in your AC troubleshooting adventure is a pretty simple one. Make sure the air filter has been recently changed and/or cleaned. A filter can become so clogged it doesn’t allow enough cool air to pass through.

If you find that’s the problem make a note to self: “DON’T DO THIS AGAIN.” Operating your system with clogged filters means you will be calling Masters soon and writing a check for an air conditioner replacement and installation.

If the system seems completely dead, check your main electrical box. Make sure the breaker(s) isn’t tripped.  If it has, go ahead and reset the breaker and see if the system starts running. If it trips again, you should call Masters so an authorized technician determines what’s wrong.

Depending on your system there may also be separate breakers outside, very close to where the condenser is located. Make sure to check them as well.

Many units also have an emergency switch on the blower that can be tripped accidentally. If you can locate the switch, make sure it is in the on position.

If there is ice on the condenser or the refrigeration line, your will have to call Masters for AC service. It generally indicates the system is low on refrigerant or has a leak. Our technician cannot work on it until it’s unfrozen so you should turn the system off and put the thermostat in fan mode to start the melting process.

If you haven’t found the problem by now, chances are the fish are threatening to go belly-up, the chocolate in the candy bowl resembles chocolate sauce, and the kids are trying to climb into the refrigerator. In other words, make the call to your favorite heating and cooling contractor in Fort Wayne, Angola, Decatur, and surrounding areas.

The expert Masters Heating & Cooling technicians will have you cool and comfortable quickly and efficiently.
