5 SIGNS YOUR WATER HEATER DOESN’T LIKE YOU ANYMORE

water heater

I love the thrill I get when I ride an extreme roller coaster. And even though I have never done it, I imagine the rush from skydiving is quite exhilarating as well. But here’s an adrenaline jolt I really don’t need: enjoying my nice hot shower when the water suddenly turns ice cold.

Yikes.

waterheaterWe have all experienced that unpleasant scenario at some point, and the hope is that the hot water has run out simply because there are two showers, the dishwasher and the washer all running at the same time. But the fear is that you have water heater issues.

Yes, we rely heavily on our hot water heater as it is an integral part of everyday living. It also consumes roughly 18 percent of our energy costs, so we want to make sure it is running properly. Unfortunately, like all appliances, water heaters are not built to last forever. On average, they will last anywhere from 10 to 12 years, maybe a little longer depending on usage, maintenance, water quality, etc. So, when do you know it is time for a new one? Here are five signs that the plumbing professionals at Masters say point to the need for a new water heater:

  • PUDDLES AROUND THE WATER HEATER – Standing water or moisture is never good, especially around your water heater. This may mean that there is a small leak or fracture in the tank itself … and from small things, big things come. It could simply be a leak coming from the fittings/connections to the tank, but either way, get it checked out by a plumber. You don’t want the entire contents of your water heater flooding your home.
  • WEIRD NOISESIf you hear rumbling or banging sounds coming from your water heater when it’s running, this may mean a sediment buildup in the tank. This will not only reduce your water heater efficiency, but it will cause prolonged heating times, which will in turn damage the metal tank.
  • RUSTRust can indicate corrosion or leaking, so be sure to have this checked out by a professional to determine the extent of the damage.
  • LUKEWARM WATERIf your hot water is anything but, the heating element, thermostats or burner on your water heater may be failing. While these parts can be replaced, many times it is not worth the expense to do so and replacing the water heater is more cost-efficient.
  • MOUNTING REPAIRSIf you keep having to call a plumber to fix various water heater issues, it probably means your water heater lifespan is about up. A faulty pilot light or corroded fittings in and of themselves may not mean much, but put it all together and it means new water heater time.

No matter if your water heater is showing one or all of these signs, call your friends at Masters today for a water heater checkup, or check out our full line of A.O. Smith and Navien water heaters. A water heater failure can lead to costly flooding and severe water damage in your home, and that’s one thrill you don’t want.
