How Often Should I Have My Home Heating System Serviced?

Masters recommends an annual tune-up and preventive maintenance for your home heating system. We are not talking about just changing a filter. Regular maintenance will keep both systems operating at peak efficiency and extend the life of your systems.

I’m Worried About The Dangers Of Carbon Monoxide. I Have A Co Detector But I’m Not Sure Where It Should Be Installed?

First, Masters appreciates your efforts to protect your family from this silent killer. Carbon monoxide poisoning kills more than 400 people on average every year. Any gas burning device; furnaces, water heaters, boilers, can pose a danger if they are not properly maintained.

For true safety, a single detector really isn’t enough. The experts recommend having one on every floor of your home. There should be one close to every sleeping area so the alarm can be heard clearly. Your CO detector will get the best reading if you mount it about five feet above the floor. If you have an attached garage there should be a detector in the house near the door to the garage. A running car in the garage can quickly fill the house with carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide detectors are good at what they do, detecting dangerous levels of the gas, but they do not detect low levels of CO. There is research showing long-term exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide can also be dangerous. You may want to consider using the more sophisticated CO monitors. They show the amount of carbon monoxide in the air and you can monitor any changes.

Does A Programmable Thermostat Really Save Money? Some Of My Friends Say Yes And Others Say They Have One But Don’t Even Use It. Who Is Right?

It’s possible they are both right. Used correctly, a programmable thermostat can reduce your monthly utility bills. The thermostats are especially valuable in situations where no one is home for several hours during the day. According to energy.gov, adjusting your thermostat by 7-10 degrees for eight hours a day can cut your yearly heating and cooling costs by as much as 10%. Even in situations where the home is occupied all day, a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat is a great convenience because it allows you to control your system when you are away for the weekend or on vacation.

As with any piece of technology, it has to be used correctly. It’s possible some of your friends don’t use their thermostats because they find them complicated and/or intimidating.
