• Gas. Approximately 60 percent of homes in the U.S. use these water heaters, which are fueled by natural gas. Pros: will generally pay for themselves in energy savings after one year; can heat more water per hour than an electric heater and still operate during a power outage. Cons: initial installation cost is more than electric; is normally less efficient than electric because of constant heating that leads to heat energy loss.
• Electric. There are many options available for smaller/larger tanks and long-term/immediate use. Pros: more efficient because it only heats water when it is needed; requires less space due to lack of need for gas exhaust pipe. Cons: low recovery rate, which could lead to shortage of hot water; electricity more expensive than gas.

Water Heater Repair

Water heater repair can be tricky. Some minor issues can be resolved, while others – such as a leaking or burst tank – mean all you can do is replace the heater. Here are some common repairs, but remember to first shut off electricity/gas to your heater before inspecting or working on your heater:

• No Hot Water . When the basic function isn’t happening, there could be a few things. On a gas heater, it may be a malfunctioning pilot light or thermocouple. With an electric heater, the problem could lie with the thermolator heating elements.
• Discolored Water/Odors . This could be caused by pipe corrosion or bacteria buildup.
• Rumbling or popping noises usually means a sediment buildup that might be resolved by flushing the tank. A hissing noise may mean an interior leak.
• Leaks. The thing about leaks is that small ones generally turn into big ones. A relief valve leak can be repaired, but if your tank is leaking, a new heater is the only solution.
