Ductless Mini-Splits: 4 Myths

Ductless Mini-Splits: 4 Myths

Ductless mini-split systems have been around for decades but have really started making headway in the U.S. the past 12-15 years. Like traditional forced-air split systems, they consist of two major parts: outdoor compressor unit and one (or more) interior wall-mounted air-blowing evaporators. Their main selling points are that they require only a few holes in the exterior wall for the refrigerant lines and tubing to connect to the indoor unit and – as the name suggests – there is no ductwork required. These features can make ductless mini-splits an attractive option if you are doing a renovation, new build or want to add climate control to a particular room or space.

Masters offers a full line of Carrier mini-split solutions and we service all brands and models, and we want to make sure our customers know the facts about ductless mini splits. Here are four myths that we can take a look at, then update with the correct information:

Mini Split Systems Will Dominate The Sales Market Soon

There is no recent evidence to suggest this is true. In fact, studies as recent as 2017 show that ductless mini split systems account for only 5 percent of the market. But, some HVAC industry experts predict that mark could rise to 15 percent in the next five years.

Ductless Means Greater Energy Efficiency

Are ductless mini-split systems more efficient than traditional systems with ductwork? In most instances, yes and here’s the reason why: there is no ductwork that can spring a leak. Some HVAC studies have suggested that homeowners lose up to 25 percent of their energy to ductwork leaks and imperfections … ouch. But the fact is that some of that air that leaks, still goes into a target space and helps cool. Of course, some also leaks into your hot attic or in between unconditioned exterior and interior walls and is wasted.

Mini Split Systems Can Be Used As A Whole Home Solution

Ductless mini split systems are best when utilized to climate control a certain space or room of a home, such as a new addition. They are often used in situations where a window unit or baseboard heating/cooling would be considered. They can be applied to whole home situations, especially if the heating/cooling needs differ from room to room and zoning can play a big part. But, generally speaking, they are not ideal for cooling an entire large existing home.

Ductless Mini Split Systems Don’t Require As Much Maintenance

While it’s true that the lack of a ductwork system can decrease the amount of maintenance, here is the “yeah, but”: neglecting regular maintenance can be downright costly. Ductless fans are not designed to handle accumulating dirt and debris and failing to keep it clean can result in very costly repairs and possible equipment breakdown and failure.

In summary, ductless mini-split systems can be a viable solution, but they are not a good fit for all homeowners. If you want to cool a new addition or provide climate control to a home or space without ductwork, they can be just what the doctor ordered. They can also work great in certain whole home circumstances, but we urge you to call our professionally-licensed technicians today to learn if ductless mini-split systems are right for your home.
