How Can We Cut Down On Indoor Air Pollutants?

How Can We Cut Down On Indoor Air Pollutants?

Indoor air quality is always a relevant and important HVAC topic because it not only affects the efficiency and overall operation of your system, but the health of your family as well. An abundance of indoor air pollutants can lead to stress on your system and it can also exacerbate health issues such as asthma, allergies and other cardiovascular or respiratory ailments.

Masters Heating & Cooling Inc. has always placed a premium on our indoor air quality (IAQ) services and this has increased even more in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are committed to helping our customers achieve the cleanest, germ- and pollutant-free breathing air possible, so here are some good practices for reaching that goal.

Removing Air Pollutants

The most common indoor air pollutants include pet dander, dust, cigarette smoke and fumes from cleaning products. More harmful – and potentially lethal – pollutants include carbon monoxide, asbestos and contagious germs and bacteria such as the afore-mentioned COVID-19. Here are some tips for eliminating or reducing those pollutants:

  1. Smoke outside. Even in 2021, experts list cigarette smoke as the most common indoor air pollutant. We don’t have to tell anyone how harmful tobacco smoke is to the smoker and others via second-hand smoke. If you must light up, go outside.
  2. Be aware of VOCs . Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be found in paint, cleaning products and even in carpet fibers. These compounds can give off harmful gases and unpleasant odors. Check paint and cleaning solution ingredients for VOCs and indoor air quality ratings on carpets.
  3. Clean flooring . Speaking of carpet, it is an incredible magnet for dust, mold and other pollutants which are tracked indoors via shoes, pets etc. Vacuum often.
  4. Change air filters and clean air ducts. Checking/changing HVAC filters regularly is one of the easiest – and most effective – things you can do to help your system filter out pollutants. And you will be surprised how much dust, mold, and other pollutants collect inside your ductwork – hire an HVAC pro to clean them.
  5. Invest in an air purifier or humidifier . Humidity – high and low – can have an adverse effect on IAQ. A whole house humidifier will help keep humidity levels constant and cut down on mold, mildew and dust issues. Air purifiers literally pluck the bad stuff right out of the air and are a great tool to combat airborne pollutants.
