AC Repair
Dealing With Summer Heat And Humidity.
Air conditioning has become such a huge part of our lives most of us can’t imagine dealing with summer heat and humidity without having AC in our home and workplace. Believe us, Masters Heating & Cooling knows this for a fact based on the number of panicked phone calls from anyone whose air conditioning stops working on a hot summer day.
An Ounce Of Prevention
Masters is always here to fix your cooling system when needed, but a little bit of work on your part can prevent many costly breakdowns.
- Think clean— It’s easy to clean exterior air conditioning condenser by rinsing off the cooling fins with a garden hose. Don’t use any high pressure nozzles as they can damage the fins. Also, make sure vegetation is cut back at least three feet to allow for proper air circulation.
- Clean the indoor vents & registers—These will always accumulate dust and dirt inside the home. Regular cleaning improves air flow and your indoor air quality.
- Change your filters— Do you ever wonder why we mention this ALL the time? It’s because dirty or blocked filters are the single biggest cause of HVAC failures. Plan on changing your filters every 30 to 90 days depending on the type of filter and the environment. If you live on a dusty road or have multiple pets your filters need to be changed more often.
- Regular maintenance— Don’t be afraid to let the professionals at Masters help. Schedule a tune-up and maintenance before the start of every cooling season. It will increase air conditioner efficiency and save money on your power bills.
When Things Go Wrong
Despite your best efforts, chances are you will at some point need an air conditioner repair. Here are some of the most common repairs our Masters technicians deal with.
- Refrigerant leaks— An air conditioner must have the proper amount of refrigerant to cool properly. If it wasn’t charged correctly when installed or if there is a leak, the AC will have a difficult time keeping your home cooled. Only a trained HVAC technician should be allowed to add or remove refrigerant. It’s imperative your unit has the exact amount required by the manufacturer. Any refrigerant leaks should be fixed to prevent further damage to your system.
- Condensate problems— Your home is comfortable in the summer because the AC not only removes the heat, but also humidity. The water has to go somewhere. In most cases it’s either drained or pumped to an area outside the house. If the condensate line gets blocked the water can cause damage to the air conditioner or overflow the condensate pan and flood the area around the indoor air handler.
- Frozen condenser coils— This is one of the most common calls Masters receives during the cooling season. This usually happens because of reduced airflow commonly caused by, you guessed it, dirty or blocked filters. A low refrigerant level can also cause an ice-up. Because our technicians can’t work on the unit until it’s thawed out, we usually advise the customer to shut the AC off so the ice can start melting before we arrive.
