Your A/C Can Handle the Rain

Your A/C Can Handle the Rain

I’m singin’ in the rain, just singin’ in the rain. What a glorious feeling’, I’m happy again … oh, hey there friends. Excuse me, sometimes you just feel like singing, right? Even if it is in the rain. While I’m no Gene Kelly (you know, the legendary actor who sang the song in the movie of the same name?), this can be a good thing, especially this time of year, because we tend to get our fair share of rain and then some during the springtime. That means that we get plenty of weather-related questions involving the maintenance and protection of your system.

Here at Masters Heating Cooling, Inc., the HVAC company to call in the Fort Wayne, Decatur, Angola, Greenwood/Indianapolis and Mishawaka areas for nearly four decades, we are happy to set the record straight when it comes to rain and how it can impact your HVAC system. Here are a few of the most frequent questions we receive:

Can Rain Damage My Outdoor System?

Modern HVAC systems like our top-notch Carrier air conditioners are designed to withstand rain and extreme temperatures. Your home’s outdoor air conditioner, which generally consists of a compressor and condenser, will not be seriously impacted by rain unless it reaches the flooding stage. If the unit is flooded and submerged either partially or completely in water, the electronic wiring and equipment may be damaged and could pose a safety hazard. If this happens, shut off the power to the entire system and call an air conditioning professional.

Should I Cover My A/c When It Rains?

In a word: no. Like we said above, your system is built to withstand rainfall and harsh weather. Covering the unit may actually result in enclosing moisture so it cannot evaporate or condensate, either of which could lead to rusting and corrosion damage to the system.

Can My System Be Serviced In The Rain?

Generally speaking, HVAC service technicians do not work on outdoor units in the rain. Most of this is due to the obvious safety hazards inherent with working on electrical components in the rain. If you do see water damage or flooding in or near your system, though, call us right away and we can make an emergency call. We do not service or tune-up during rain since it can damage tools, as well as the additional water on the condenser fins will extract a higher level of heat, making it impossible to properly test.

Spring means rain in the Midwest, and there is not much we can do about it—except sing a happy song, of course. You can rest assured, however, your system is built to withstand it!
