Can A Ductless Mini-Split Be Installed In A Basement?

Can You Put a Ductless Mini Split in the Basement?

Unless one has been installed in their home, many homeowners aren’t familiar with the ductless mini-split . As HVAC systems go, this type of system is adaptable and versatile. It’s kind of like the little workhorse of the industry. In fact, for specific circumstances, a mini-split can be a perfect HVAC solution residentially, commercially and institutionally.

The ductless mini-split was invented in the 1950’s in Japan to accommodate the close housing units that have thinner outer walls. It became increasingly popular in Asia and in Western and Eastern Europe. U.S. distributors were wary and didn’t get behind this compact way to provide both heat and air conditioning until the mid-1980s. Since then, the ductless mini-split has become more widely used in the U.S. as well.

Its name gives a clue to the unusual main feature of the system. No ductwork is required to carry the hot or cool air. This feature makes it a perfect way to heat or cool basements since they’re typically not included in the design and specifications for a home’s HVAC system. Without the need of expensive duct fabrication, the ductless mini-split is a more affordable option when remodeling existing basement space.

In addition to its ability to provide both either heat or cool air, the HVAC system is also able to dehumidify indoor air, eliminating the need for a separate dehumidifier. This is a great feature for basements as they tend to be damp and have higher levels of moisture.

Other appealing aspects of ductless mini-splits are their ability to heat or cool a space only when it’s occupied, lower upfront installation costs and their relatively easy installation. These advantages along with the fact that up to four indoor units can be operated by one outdoor condenser, makes it a great home improvement investment.
