Why Is My House Heater Not Working?

More specifically, we expect our heater to work the way it is supposed to and keep our families warm and cozy. The first thing to do is identify the probable causes of heating system malfunction. Let’s take a look at some common problems and how they can be remedied:

Power

Check your circuit board and make sure the breaker to the unit is flipped on. If not, flip it on and keep an eye on it … there is a reason it tripped off.

Thermostat

Many times, this is the culprit as your thermostat is the control center of your HVAC system; it tells the heater when to come on and how long to run. Check the batteries or fuses if it has them. If power to the thermostat is confirmed, check your settings and make sure they are correct.

Igniter Or Pilot Light

If you have a gas furnace, oftentimes a faulty igniter or pilot light could be the problem. Make sure that the unit is getting gas, then shut off the reset valve located just inside the furnace door. Wait five minutes, then turn it back on. If the unit is getting gas, but the igniter is still not lighting, it may need replacement.
