How Long Is An HVAC System Expected To Last?

Here is the real deal: HVAC life expectancy depends on many factors. One of the first things to consider is efficiency. Many HVAC systems are replaced while still working because over time they become less efficient and cost more money to operate. That’s a big reason why heating and cooling systems are replaced every 13 years on average.

Basic Guidelines

If forced to talk about maximum life expectancy before a system crashes and burns, here is what I would say about some of the most common HVAC components in Fort Wayne, Decatur, Angola, Indianapolis, Greenwood, and Mishawaka, IN:

Furnace Life expectancy

Usually, you can count on at least 15 years and maybe as long as 25 years. Some of the key factors that determine longevity:

  • Sized correctly for your home
  • Regular maintenance done every year
  • Proper installation when purchased

Air Conditioner Life Expectancy

An AC replacement could be needed any time after 10 years. The lifespan also depends on climate and location. Obviously, the AC in Arizona is going to run longer and work harder than an air conditioner in the upper Midwest. Exposure to outdoor elements, wind, rain, sun, can also shorten the life expectancy of an air conditioner. Just like a furnace, maximum life depends on correct sizing and regular maintenance.

Heat Pump Life Expectancy

Since it provides heating and cooling, a heat pump is working all year, with maybe a month off in the spring and again in the fall. This means a heat pump is even more exposed to the elements (you can at least cover an air conditioner during the winter). With all of that said you can expect a heat pump to last about as long as a stand-alone air conditioner.

Don’t Forget About Geothermal

A quick word here about ground source heat pumps (geothermal). These are located inside the home unlike air source heat pumps. This means they are NOT exposed to the elements. As a result, they can be expected to provide heating and cooling for 25 years or more. While geothermal heating and cooling is a more expensive HVAC system in terms of upfront cost, this increased life expectancy and huge energy savings should be kept in mind when deciding whether to install one of these systems.

You Can Make A Difference

As a homeowner in Fort Wayne, Decatur, Angola, Indianapolis, Greenwood, or Mishawaka, IN you play a key role in determining the life expectancy of your HVAC system. If you want to delay a furnace or AC replacement for as long as possible, then make sure you are religious about routine maintenance. Your furnace and air conditioner are just like your car, they need TLC to last as long as possible, so call Masters Heating & Cooling now to schedule your seasonal maintenance.
